We go to Wanaka

We had not been sure whether to spend more time at the glaciers or whether to get on the road south again, but everyone we spoke to on the glacier yesterday recommended to go to Wanaka.  So today we go to Wanaka.

First up we head out to Lake Matheson just to the south of Fox village for a walk round the lake to see the view of the mountains.  Unfortunately the clouds have come in again and the mountains are uniformly sliced off at around 500m.
Lake Matheson but no mountains behind
It's soon time to head on the road and make our way down to the Haast Pass. On the way we stop to look at some of the impressive waterfalls (such as Roaring Billy and Thunder Creek) and the Pleasant Flat.

A pleasant flat
Soon we are past Haast and making our way down the side of Lake Wanaka.  The scenery out of Betty's window is amazing and we are not at all upset when we come across some road works and have to wait about an hour to get through a recent rock avalanche.

Some views around lake Wanaka
Eventually we make it to Wanaka and through to our chosen campsite on the edge of town.  This is much anticipated as it has been rated as one of the best in NZ.  We get checked in and get Betty powered up on site with a great view out over Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains.  We then decide to take the courtesy shuttle into town to go to the cinema but more on that in another blog.
