Walking in Wanaka

It is such a lovely sunny day today which is good as we had planned to do some tramping.  A quick pop into the i-site to check what tracks are open first and then its off to the Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain Summit to the west of Wanaka.

We get our sandwiches made in Betty and pack the rest of our lunch in preparation for being out for 4 hours or so.

The first bit is a lovely gentle uphill climb for an hour or so until we get to a fabulous look-out over Lake Wanaka.

Lucky for us although the sun is out there is a nice gentle breeze to keep the sandflies away and we have the whole look-out to ourselves.  So we stretch out in the sun and enjoy our lunch.

Unfortunately the next bit of the climb is pretty steep and not easy going, but once we get to the top the view of Mt Aspiring National Park is fabulous.

We spend ages at the top just taking in the view as it is only us there.  Mt Aspiring looks pretty impressive in the far distance, and we also watch some of the paragliders jumping off Treble Cone.

Kelvin was chuffed to bits he made it to the top
After an hour or so we decide it is time to head back to Betty as we fancy going to the cinema again later.

Once back at Betty we check the map to see how high we have walked and find out that at 775m we have climbed in Scottish terms a Corbett and not quite a Munro.
