We have a well earned lie in this
morning after our kayaking adventure and big drive yesterday, but we are
treated with a magnificent sunny view over Akaroa at breakfast, complete with a
cruise ship in the harbour.
Great views of Akaroa |
Then we head
off down the steep hill into town (not thinking about having to climb back up
later).
Time for a little bit of history,
before the Mauri signed the Treaty of Waitangi when they agreed to accept
British protection in return for an exchange of land, many different countries
had tried to colonise NZ including Holland and France. One little bit of France still remains at
Akaroa, where much like people in Waipu have a strong connection with Scotland,
residents here have a strong connection with France. There is even a man who walks daily along the
beach waving the French flag
Ou est mon bateau? |
we are not sure whether this was just for the
tourists or whether he truly believed he was in France…..
After a good explore of the shops
and a picnic (including Croque Monsieur for Mr M) on the harbour we are
disappointed to discover le mini golf is closed for the day, and so instead
head back up the big and hugely steep hill for a lazy afternoon, with a bottle
of fizzy, Betty’s back doors wide open, enjoying our books/kindle in the lovely
sunny weather.
And relax |
We also make the
unfortunate discovery that Mr M has received a speeding ticket whilst we were
in Gisbourne…
Caught by the Fuzz... |
not wanting to rub in this unfortunate occurrence Mrs M or
course resists the urge to say “I told you so”!
We also enjoy another fabulous sunset tonight, good enough to rivel the one at Mt Cook a few days ago.
Possibly our best sunset yet |
Mrs M
