As we have been driving around over
the last couple of days Mrs M has been noticing the names of some of mountains
we have been driving through. It has
been noticed that the naming of the mountains falls into a number of different
categories.
Some of them have the kind of names
you would imagine a mountain of 2000+m which no doubt requires great skill and
courage to climb, such as Mt Aspiring and The Great Unknown.
Others are clearly named after
people who have climbed them or famous people at the time they are climbed such
as Mt Cook, Mt Brewster or the McClimont Peak.
Some must be named after a loved one
such as Mt Bertha or Mt Doris.
Then there are those whos names give
a feel for some of the torture which must be endured to reach their summit,
such as Mt Chaos, Mt Dreadful, Mt Awful and The Blister.
But some it is just too difficult to
work out what the inspiration has been such as Camp Oven Dome, The Rolling Pin
and Big Geordie.
Mr M
Can't believe you didn't take Kelvin to the top of McClimont Peak, it's only 2028 mts !!
