On the way to Oamaru

After a comedy photo of Kelvin in the kitchen
Meet the Kelvinator
we head off for an exploration of the windy coastal roads of the Otago Peninsula and some really spectacular scenery.

Soon it is time to move on to the next leg of our journey and we go north past Dunedin and up to Moeraki Village which is famed for the Moeraki Boulders.

The boulders are actually concretions formed by calcite precipitation around a nucleus (probably a fossil) during burial.

There are also classic examples of septarian nodules which are concretions which display polygonal cracks.

The boulders are spread across the beach and look like they have washed ashore, but have actually been eroded from the weak mudstone cliffs.  They look really bizarre as they are perfectly circular and we enjoy our stop off there before heading further north to Oamaru.

Oamaru is famed for its ornate limestone Victorian style buildings.  It has a very British feel and we enjoy having an explore especially through the converted warehouses which are now stuffed full of galleries, arts and crafts.  A good way to spend an afternoon.
