Varanasi, or Benares, or Kashi

We make it to Varanasi at around rush hour (or so we think) and it takes about 2 hours to get from the airport to our hotel (about 35kms).  This seems like the most full-on part of India we have been to yet.

We get checked in and then head out with our guide Dada to take in some of the sights before we go down to the Ganges for evening Puja

One of the impressive sights we see is a temple started by Gandhi, which inside has a marble carving of India with all the hills and rivers to scale.  Really impressive.

We then take some rickshaws back through town as the traffic is pretty heavy and head down to the Ganges.

The evening Puja is performed by seven young priests as odd numbers are auspicious in Hindu culture.  The whole ritual is done on the roof of the Ghat rather than on the steps themselves - as we are in Monsoon the river is 35ft higher than usual !  The ceremony is very interesting and lasts for around 45 minutes.

We then head back to the hotel for dinner, can't wait for another curry...
