Jodhpur – the Mighty Meherangarh

First impression of Jodhpur is of the imposing Meherangarh Fort, towering over the city visible for miles around.  The next striking thing is how clean the city is, which is a pleasant change from most of the other towns and cities we have been to with vast amounts of rubbish littering the streets.

After a quick visit to JaswantaThanda, a cenotaph to one of Jodhpur’s most popular Maharajas, we make our way up to the Meherangarh.
Meherangarh - impressive on the hill

In previous blogs we have commented on how each of the Rajasthani Forts has been more impressive than the last and this is no exception.  Situated ontop of a 400ft high hill, with 120ft high walls it looks like a super-sized Edinburgh Castle, and some of you may recognise it from Masterchef a few years ago.

In addition to being impressive from the outside, with excellent funding from the Getty Foundation (amongst others) many of the interior buildings have been magnificently restored.

Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors

Nice bedroom complete with Christmas baubles !

Definitely a case of saving the best till last and this is our favourite Fort.
