Why Portland?

So over the last few days as we have met different people and talked about our trip one common question has been why Portland?  And people are a little taken aback by the answer because there is nothing to do in Portland.

It is not strictly true that there is nothing to do in Portland but we are definitely looking forward to a bit of downtime from sightseeing and having a chilled out day in Portland.

We find a local coffee shop for breakfast and enjoy our best tea in the USA so far and some lovely homemade breakfast cinnamon buns, before having a mooch round town.  First up is a bit of winter clothes shopping as we have sent home all of our summer clothes and it is currently only 4degC in Portland.  And Portland is a great place for shopping as the state of Oregon is tax free!

As we have been walking round town we have noticed loads and loads of green cycle lanes as Portland is a very cycle friendly city.  We even see a couple of Bromptons flying about, making Mr M a little homesick.

Soon its lunchtime and we find lovely Deli for some sandwiches and then straight back out for our highlight of Portland - Powells Books.

Powells is the most amazing bookshop as its the worlds largest independent bookshop with over 4 millions books.  We grab one of the shop maps (to stop us getting lost!) and then spend the rest of the afternoon in the bookshop.

Eventually we decide to leave the bookshop and head back to the hotel and freshen up before dinner.  We found a lovely restaurant last night which served delicious comfort home cooking and we loved it so much that we have decided to com back again tonight.

Although there isn't much to do in Portland we have had a great day.

Mr M
