Throughout our campervan trip we have been keeping a note of all the places we have stayed and have also given them a 1-10 score depending on how much we liked them, their facilities and memorability!
We also came up with a number of different categories and have compiled our best of list! Who knows this may be of use for our next campervan adventure or for any one else planning a trip themselves!
Our overall favourite is shown in bold in the shortlist – where two are shown we couldn’t agree which was best!
1. Most Friendly Campers (i.e. most friendly neighbours):
Napier Top 10; Martinborough Top 10.
2. Most Friendly Welcome (from the campsite operators):
Invercargill Top 10; Ahipoa; Martinborough Top 10; Wanaka Mt Aspiring;
Motoeka Top 10, Russell Top 10; & Taupo De Bretts.
3. Best Bathrooms:
Ohakune Top 10; Wanaka Mt Aspiring
4. Best BBQ’s:
Wanaka Mt Aspiring; Oamaru Top 10
5. Best Pitch:
Wanaka Mt Aspiring; Russell Top 10, Ahipoa & Hahei.
6. Best View from the Pitch:
Wanaka Mt Aspiring; Russell Top 10, Kaikora Top 10; Glentanner &
Akaroa Top 10.
7. Worst Weather:
Blue Lakes, Rotarua Top 10; Taupo De Bretts; Milford Lodge;
Dunedin Top 10; Baylis Beach; & Hokitika
8. Best other facilities:
Motoeka Top 10 (Jumping Pillow & Spa); Taupo De Bretts (Spa); &
Gisbourne Top 10 (Bikes).
9. Best chillout vibe:
Hahei; Marahau Beach Camp; & Wanaka Mt Aspiring.
10. Most Scary: Manapouri –
This was by far THE most scary place we stayed at. We were the only people staying there, our pitch was surrounded by gothic chalets; there were fully clothed manikins in the office looking out of the window, the check in lady was extremely odd, we had to check the bathrooms to make sure no one was hiding inside! - Just like something out of a Hitchcock movie!
11. Biggest danger of death:
Manapouri (see above); & Milford Lodge (large risk of being washed away
by rising river of being crushed by falling rocks from overhanging cliffs).
12. Best Spa:
Motoeka Top 10; & Taupo De Bretts.
13. Biggest hugs on arrival:
Topps B&B, Wellington.
14. Best local information:
Fleets Inn, Auckland.
15. Most expensive showers:
Topps B&B, Wellington.
16. Coldest shower:
Fox Top 10; & Murchison.
