It’s with a heavy
heart that we have to leave Hahei this morning.
We have had a brilliant time here, with a beach front site for Betty, an
amazing time kayaking yesterday and the sun out again today. But as Mrs M says ‘we need to keep going
round on the journey otherwise we won’t make it home’. And for those who have read the campervan
rules I refer you to Rule 1.
What also hits you is
the large amount of hotel and motel accommodation (hence the Rotovegas), as it
is geared up 100% for tourism.
So we make our way
south off the Coromandel and head down to Rotorua. We are not sure what to expect from Rotorua
(or Rotovegas as the locals like to call it) as we have heard mixed reviews
from different people.
The first thing that
hits you on approaching Rotorua is the smell…
As it is situated in an active volcanic area it has a large amount of
geothermal activity, much of which manifests itself as geysers, fumaroles and
hot springs, all tinged with a sulphurous ‘eggy’ smell.

We park up for a
wander round town and an average cuppa and peppermint slice – not a strong
start. But we are pleasantly surprised
by the Government Gardens which are looking lovely with all the spring flowers
out.

We decide to head out
to the south of town for a Top 10 campsite on the Blue Lake as some of the
volcanic sights we want to see tomorrow are on that side of town.
