Round the Peninsula

As we are in one of the most scenic parts of the North Island the Coromandel Peninsula we are having a relaxed day with a short trip round from Thames on the west coast to Hahei on the east coast.

We first head into Thames for a wander about which turns out to be a lovely little town with a bustling high street with lots of interesting shops and cafes.  After the obligatory tea and cake stop we head on up the road.

The road winds up big Rhyolite hills (more geology blogs to follow), through lovely white sandy beaches and past green-lip mussel farms.

This really is picture postcard New Zealand.

Next up is CoromandelTown, another lovely little town with a selection of nice shops and cafes.  This time we head into the local smokehouse to pick up some fish for tea.  We also head into the local i-site to have a look at what activities are on offer.  The cheery man in the i-site suggests if we are going to Hahei that we should consider the sea kayaking tour to Cathedral Cove as it’s a local highlight.

Onwards we finally make our way to Hahei around 4pm and check into the Hahei Holiday Resort.  We are lucky and get ‘upgraded’ to a beach front site for the same price as a normal site, and also book ourselves onto a sea kayaking tour for tomorrow morning.

Having made it round the Peninsula we have achieved today’s objective.
