Another big driving
day today as we are planning to make our way from Rotorua to Gisborne to the
north of Poverty Bay.
On the way we stop off
at Ohope for a tea and cake stop and are both impressed with the lovely shops
and cafes in this sleepy seaside town.
Ohope Beach |
We had originally planned to stay in Ohope as a launching off point for the isolated far east coast, but we have decided to break from the planned route to bank some 'free' days and get some extra time in Napier and Taupo later this week.
Once more on the road
we battle through some strong wind and arrive in Gisbourne around 5pm.
Our initial impression
of Gisbourne was less than impressive as we had driven in through a fairly
industrial part of town. Keen to have a
look round to see if we can find the nicer bits we grab a couple of the bikes
from the campsite and take a cycle into the centre of town.
Watch your head Mrs M ! |
As we cycle along the
side of one of the three rivers in Gisbourne we think this part of town reminds
us quite a bit of Inverness. We also
stumble across the shortest river in New Zealand and decide to race along its
full 1200m length !
NZ's shortest river |
We make it back to the
campsite just before the rain starts and call it a day with some pasta for tea
and an early night.
