Many of you will know that neither
Mrs M or myself are natural water-babies, usually preferring our activities
either on the water or on dry land not in the water. That’s why it came as quite a surprise to me
over breakfast when Mrs M proclaimed that she wanted to try snorkelling again
today!
Apparently many moons ago Mrs M had
snorkelled off the Barrier Reef in Oz but had hated it as she had to jump off
the back of a boat and paddle over to a reef in quite deep water.
On Lankayan though things were
different. As we had a paddle on the
beach yesterday we noted – utilising our highly skilled geological observations
– that the beach was very shallow for a long way. In fact we had seen others snorkel a few
hundred meters off the beach and then stand up.
This bode well for ‘face in the water snorkel floating’, with the
ability to stand up at any point.
So off we went to the dive school
after breakie and rented the appropriate gear.
Mrs M saying ‘I’m so excited’,
Mr M saying ‘I can’t believe I’m doing
this…’
We then found our nice quiet bit of
beach outside our hut and donned the mask and flippers etc, sat on our bums in
the warm water and stuck our faces in the water.
After a good half hour of
spluttering and splashing as we got used to finding a good mask seal and
breathing through a plastic tube Mrs M discovered she actually enjoyed it and
ventured out further for more for ‘face in the water snorkel floating’. I on the other hand confirmed I didn’t like
it at all and resumed my position of toes in the water, ass in the sand, good
book in my hand.
Mrs M then proceeded to spend most
of the day for ‘face in the water snorkel floating’ looking at all the shallow
water coral and masses of exotic fish including angel fish, a Nemo (clown)
fish, reef sharks, sea cucumbers and an enormous bright blue starfish.
Altogether another fine day.
Mr M
I envy you the snorkelling, must be like swimming in an aquarium !
