First impression of Jodhpur is of
the imposing Meherangarh Fort, towering over the city visible for miles
around. The next striking thing is how
clean the city is, which is a pleasant change from most of the other towns and
cities we have been to with vast amounts of rubbish littering the streets.
After a quick visit to JaswantaThanda, a cenotaph to one of Jodhpur’s most popular Maharajas, we make our way
up to the Meherangarh.
Meherangarh - impressive on the hill |
In previous blogs we have commented
on how each of the Rajasthani Forts has been more impressive than the last and
this is no exception. Situated ontop of
a 400ft high hill, with 120ft high walls it looks like a super-sized Edinburgh Castle, and some of you may recognise it from Masterchef a few years ago.
120ft high walls |
In addition to being impressive from
the outside, with excellent funding from the Getty Foundation (amongst others)
many of the interior buildings have been magnificently restored.
Detailed stone carving |
Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors |
Nice bedroom complete with Christmas baubles ! |
Definitely a case of saving the best
till last and this is our favourite Fort.
