Not only is Jodhpur famous for the
Meherangarh Fort but also for its blue buildings.
Traditionally buildings painted blue
were owned by Brahmin who used the colour for spiritual reasons. But quickly people realised that the blue
colour faded less quickly than the traditional whitewash, kept the buildings
cooler in the baking desert summer and helped to repel mosquitos, so everyone
jumped on the bandwagon.
The views from up on the Fort
looking down on the Blue City below were stunning.

Looking like they are freshly painted (they might have been!) |
After a few hours looking round the
Meherangarh we then headed down the steep steps to the Blue City below for a
look round the Sardar Bazaar.
Jodhpur Clock Tower |
As with many of these old cities the
bazaar is a maze of tiny little streets and alleyways stuffed full of
interesting little shops selling everything you could possibly imagine.
Fruit and Veg Market |
Masala Spices |
Nice house above the shops |
Feeling slightly weary after a good
exploration of the bazaar we head off to a nearby Haveli for a spot of
lunch. Luckily they have curry on the
menu!
